Liefkenshoek
Rail Link
Belgium’s most populous city Antwerp is seen as a
major economic centre in the future, which will also serve as a balance to Belgium’s
growing economic clout in the region. To aid in its development comes the Liefkenshoek
Rail Link, a project which took five years to complete and opened in December
2014. It is described as the country’s largest PPP model and its success demonstrates
the effectiveness of the PPP model.
“The 16.2‑kilometer freight-only railway linking the
western and eastern Antwerp docks has been praised for relieving increasing
traffic congestion and serving as an alternative to roads” (KPMG). The project
costed $1 billion.
